Resistance boxes are used to add resistance into an electric motor circuit for modifying the performance characteristic of slipring induction motors of EOT cranes, rubber mills, steel rolling mills, cement mills, power plants, conveyors, coke oven, blowers etc. The basic types of resistors are stainless steel ( grade – 304) and punched steel resistors. Resistors are designed to meet requirements of both A.C. D.C. applications. These are manufactured for a current rating of 10 to 800 amps. Continuous resistors of higher ratings are manufactured using 2 or more parallel paths. Resistors with short time rating up to 3000 amps or even more for neutral earthling are possible which suitable for system voltage upto 11 kv and above. For speed control and developing starting torque with low starting currents. They are also used as Dynamic braking resistor for V.V.V.V.F.A.C. Drives, electric loading of ac alternators, degenerators and dynamometers.

 

TYPES OF RESISTORS:
  1. Stainless Steel ( grade-304 ) Resistors: These resistors consists of stainless steel wires or strip in form of grids. The current rating generally ranges from 7 amps to 400 amps continuous with multiple or single paths.
  2. Punched Steel Resistors: The resistors consists of grids punched from correction resisting nickel chromium alloy sheet steels. The punched steel grids. The punched steel grids are completely immune to shock vibration.They function reliably under the worst operating conditions and are particularly suited for steel mill duty. These resistors are available in wide range of current rating from 8 amps to 800 amps continuous with single multiple parallel paths.

The system of cooling resistors are of two kinds:

  1. Air Cooled Type
  2. Oil Cooled Type

Master controller are used for remote operation of the equipment like E. O. T cranes rolling mills drives etc. The enclosure of the controller confirms to I. P 54 degrees of protection, making it dust proof. It has u to 6 notches either side with maximum 24 contacts as per desired sequence. Controller are provided with spring Dead man’s handle arrangemtn. They are compact up to 4-0-4 step. Suitable for Hoist-Grab, Cross Travel Long Travel. Up tp 16 contacts per motion with spring return arrangement is provided.

SALIENT FEATURES:
  • Long Life: Millions of operations are possible without significant wear to melamine cams and contacts which are rated for 40amps at 500 V A.C.
  • Simple Maintenance: Maintenance is simplified through the use of individual interchangeable contact blocks. Contact tips can be easily inspected without removing the block or disturbing connections. When contacts are worn, only fixed and moving contacts can be replaced by removing only one screw. The remaining contact blocks and circuits are disturbed.
  • Wide Electrical Clearance: The design of contact block provides generous electrical creepage and clearance, preventing arcing between contact blocks or to ground. Heavy duty terminal screws are located for convenience and ease of wiring.

Thruster brake is used to slow down the speed of a machine and stop the machine at a desirable position. The brake stress is applied to the brake shoes with the help of a pre-stressed compression spring mounted vertically between the thruster and brake lever. The brake shoes press on the rotating brake drum causing a reduction in its speed and finally getting it to a halt. The thruster rods are connected with the brake by means of an angle lever. As the piston travels upwards the angle lever turns, pushes the brake rod and compresses the brake spring.

 

While this is going on, the brake lever on the other side of the wheel (Brake Drum) is retracted. The brake lever at the thruster begins to move when the first lever reaches the stop on the brake base member. The Thruster and the brake are adjusted in such a manner that they reserve about 1/3 of the stroke for compensation of the wear of the brake linings.

The thruster cylinder accommodates a centrifugal pump and a piston with two push-rods extending outside through thruster cover and transmitting effort to the brake. The design is compact and has a long life. It is very easy to maintain. Main components used are of high quality cast iron and steel. The Thruster is operated by an integral three phase squirrel cage motor. These thruster brakes are suitable for 400/440 Volts, 3 Phase A.C. supply for a wide range of drum sizes, from 100mm to 600 mm in diameter.
